A 150-Year-Old Typewriter Jam Is the Reason You Text the Way You Do
You've typed on a QWERTY keyboard thousands of times today. Maybe tens of thousands. You didn't choose it. Nobody asked you if you wanted it. It was just there — on your phone, your laptop, your office computer — exactly where it's always been. And the reason it's there at all has nothing to do with efficiency, comfort, or modern design. It has everything to do with a mechanical problem that was solved before your great-grandparents were born.
Trace it back far enough, and your last text message leads directly to a printing shop in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in 1868.
The Machine That Kept Choking
Christopher Latham Sholes was a newspaper editor and part-time inventor who spent the late 1860s trying to build a practical writing machine. He wasn't the first person to try — there had been crude typing contraptions before his — but Sholes was determined to make something that actually worked at speed.
The early versions of his typewriter had a serious flaw. The keys were arranged in a straightforward alphabetical order, which sounds logical until you realize what happened when a typist moved quickly: the metal typebars — the little arms that swung up to strike the page — would collide mid-air and jam together. Fast typists were constantly stopping to untangle the mechanism with their fingers.
Sholes and his collaborator, Carlos Glidden, spent years rearranging the keys to separate the most commonly paired letters in the English language. If E and R were likely to be struck in quick succession, they needed to be physically far apart on the machine so their arms wouldn't meet in the middle. The result, after significant trial and error, was the layout we now call QWERTY — named for the first six letters on the top row.
It wasn't elegant. It wasn't based on what felt natural to human hands. It was purely a mechanical workaround, an engineering patch for a hardware limitation.
In 1873, Sholes licensed the design to Remington — yes, the same company that made rifles — and the first commercial typewriters went to market. Within a decade, QWERTY was the industry standard.
The Layout That Outlived Its Problem
Here's the thing: the mechanical jam problem disappeared almost as soon as electric typewriters arrived in the early 20th century. The physical typebars were gone. There was no longer any reason to keep letters separated by collision risk. The engineering constraint that created QWERTY had been completely removed from the equation.
But by then, QWERTY had something more powerful than logic on its side: momentum.
Millions of typists had already trained their fingers on the layout. Typing schools taught it. Businesses expected it. Remington had sold it so widely that competitors who tried different arrangements found no buyers. The layout had become self-reinforcing — the more people learned it, the more valuable it was to know it, and the less anyone wanted to switch.
This is what economists call a network effect, and it's brutal. Once enough people are using the same standard, changing it costs more than it's worth — even if the new version is objectively better.
The Dvorak Experiment Nobody Adopted
In 1936, a University of Washington professor named August Dvorak unveiled an alternative keyboard layout he'd spent years developing with actual ergonomic research behind it. The Dvorak Simplified Keyboard placed the most common English letters directly on the home row — where your fingers naturally rest — and arranged them so that most words could be typed with minimal hand movement.
Studies suggested Dvorak typists made fewer errors and could reach higher speeds with less fatigue. The U.S. Navy ran trials during World War II and found that retraining typists on Dvorak paid for itself within ten days.
None of it mattered. QWERTY didn't budge.
The American business world had too much invested in the existing standard — trained workers, printed materials, manufactured machines. Dvorak remained a curiosity for productivity enthusiasts, never a mainstream alternative. Even today, you can switch your phone or computer to Dvorak in about thirty seconds. Almost no one does.
From Typewriter to Touchscreen
When personal computers arrived in the 1970s and 1980s, no one seriously reconsidered the layout. The keyboards that shipped with early PCs simply copied what typewriters had always used. There were no typebars anymore — there had been no typebars for decades — but QWERTY came along for the ride anyway, now a habit so deeply embedded in culture that questioning it felt almost absurd.
And then came the smartphone.
When Apple launched the original iPhone in 2007, the touchscreen keyboard was one of its most scrutinized features. Here, finally, was a genuine blank slate. No physical keys, no manufacturing legacy, no mechanical constraints whatsoever. Designers could have placed letters anywhere. They could have invented something entirely new.
They built a QWERTY keyboard.
Of course they did. Three generations of Americans had grown up with that layout baked into their muscle memory. Launching a phone with anything else would have been a barrier to adoption, not a feature. The ghost of Christopher Sholes's jamming typebars had followed technology all the way into the 21st century.
Why It Still Matters
The QWERTY story is a surprisingly honest window into how technology actually evolves — not always toward the best solution, but toward the most entrenched one. The layout you use every day wasn't chosen because it's fast, comfortable, or intuitive. It was chosen because a 19th-century machine kept breaking, and the fix became too popular to undo.
There's something almost poetic about it. Billions of people across the world — texting, coding, writing emails, searching the internet — are all moving their fingers in a pattern that was originally designed to slow them down just enough to stop two pieces of metal from colliding.
The jam is long gone. The keyboard stayed.
